About Solar Panels

A solar cell panel, solar electric panel, photo-voltaic (PV) module or solar panel is an assembly of photo-voltaic cells mounted in a framework for installation. Solar panels use sunlight as a source of energy to generate direct current electricity. A collection of PV modules is called a PV panel, and a system of PV panels is called an array. Arrays of a photovoltaic system supply solar electricity to electrical equipment.

Solar System

Solar panel standalone is off no use, to use electricity from solar panel, it has to be connected with solar inverters and battery too if power storage required.

Types of Solar Systems

There are three main types of Solar PV systems:-

  • On-Grid Systems
  • Off-Grid Systems
  • Hybrid Systems

The price of solar system ranges between ₹35 – ₹70 per watt depending upon which brand of solar panel and inverter you buy, the other factor which effects price of solar price is its efficiency, size, structure and delivery location.

WORK PROCESS

How to Install Solar Panels

Solar panels should be installed by professional installers. Any mistake in installing solar panel will lead to lesser efficiency and loss in power generation.

Maintenance of Solar Panels

Solar panels are low maintenance products; however, it is important to clean solar panels on a regular basis to clear off the dust particles that get accumulated on it. A Cleaner solar panel might generate up to 25% more power. The cost of maintaining solar panels is near to zero (0) or a few hundred rupees a year. Most solar panels have silicon cells laminated and framed which ensures long life and less maintenance. Cleaning and washing solar panels are a must for longevity and retaining efficiency.

Important note for maintenance:

  • Keep Solar panels out of the shade
  • The best way to clean the solar panel is by using soft cloths, shampoo, or detergent
  • Clean in a way that it may not scratch the glass

Types of Solar Panel

#

Mono crystalline

Mono crystalline solar panels are generally thought of as a solar product. The main advantages of crystalline panels are higher efficiencies and sleeker aesthetics. Panels cell are made by single crystal of silicon.

#

Poly Crystalline

Polycrystalline solar panels generally have lower efficiencies than mono crystalline options, but their advantage is a lower price point. This panel cells are made by combination of many crystal of silicon.

F.A.Qs

Frequently asked questions

01
How do solar systems work?

The solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells, which convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. Solar Inverter then converts the DC electricity generated by the solar panels into the alternating current (AC) electricity.

02
How much does solar cost?

The cost of a Solar PV Rooftop Setup depends on many factors such as the Mounting structure, connected load, type and quality of the components used in the system, total available roof area etc. As an estimate, a grid connected solar PV System with Grade A manufacturer’s components costs around Rs.45000 – 55000 per KW while a battery connected system costs around Rs.60000 – 65000 per KW.

03
What happens to solar panels when it's cloudy or raining?

Solar panels are actually more efficient at cooler temperatures than hot ones. Solar panel generates electricity as per availability of sunlight also panels generate in diffused light so during rainy season there is partial sunlight due to cloud there will be generation. Rain actually helps to keep solar panels operating efficiently by washing away any dust or dirt.

04
How long do solar panels last?

Since solar systems have no moving parts, they are very durable and require little maintenance. Solar modules come with a manufacturer’s warranty for 25 years. It may last up to 30 years or more and efficiency decreases ½ percent (0.5%) annually.

05
Is my roof suited for solar? / How much Roof Top Area do I require to install a Solar PV System?

1 kW of system requires 90 to 100 sqft of shadow free area, there should be no significant shade over your roof from trees or neighborhood buildings.

06
Will my solar work if there is a power cut?

The solar panels will certainly continue to generate electricity as per availability of sunlight. On-grid system has to follow anti islanding compliance so there will be generation but we cannot utilize the power during power cut. Off-grid system and Hybrid solar system has battery back-up so the system will generate also be utilized during power cut.

07
Will my system work at night?

As solar panels require sunlight for generation during night there will be so generation of electricity, off-grid solar system has battery back-up which provide back-up during night time.

08
How does shade/ Shadow affect the solar system’s performance?

As solar panels require sunlight for generation of electricity so shadow on panels will stop generation. Shadow cast on even just part of one solar panel in your solar array can potentially compromise the output of the whole system.

09
What is the Financial Assistance provided by the Ministry? / What incentives are available to me? / What subsidies are available?

Consumers in Haryana will be given 40 per cent subsidy up to 3 kW and 20 per cent for more than 3 kW and up to 10 kW for installing solar systems on their rooftops from empanelled solar firms.

10
Will solar panels work in winter?

Solar panels will work as per availability of sun light; during winters if sun light is available there will be generation. Generally in winters solar PV systems generates with less efficiency as compared to summers.

11
How is a Solar PV System better than Diesel Generator as a backup system?

The capital cost of a PV System is higher than a DG System, a DG System accounts for a high fuel cost and maintenance cost. Solar PV system does not requires fuel and has very less maintenance also solar does not pollute environment as Diesel Generator.

12
What are the different types of Solar Systems?
ON-GRID HYBRID OFF-GRID
No battery in On-grid Battery as per back-up requirement Large no. of batteries required
No solar working during power cuts Working during power cuts Working during power cuts
Save electricity bill Save electricity bill & DG set bill both Reduce DG set bill to minimum extent
Least expensive More expensive than On-grid but less than Off-grid Expensive as compare to On-grid & Hybrid
take input from both Solar and Power grid Take input from both solar & Power grid Take input from battery
For areas like Delhi where no power cuts For areas like Haryana frequent power cut For areas having no power grids like rural areas
No load limitation Dedicated load limitation Dedicated load limitation
Power generation per kW 4 – 4.5 Units Power generation per kW 2 – 2.5 Units Power generation per kW 2.5 Units
13
If I have solar panels installed how will this affect my roof?

Current solar mounting hardware and techniques cause no harm or risk to your roof as there will be no drilling on roof to avoid leakages also there will be no effects on ducts or openings.

14
What is the electricity generated by a solar rooftop installation of 1kw?

A solar roof top installation of size 1 kw produces 4 units of electricity per day on an average 1440 units of electricity is generated per year.

15
What kind of maintenance schedule do I have to follow to keep the Solar PV System in a healthy Condition?

Your solar system requires almost zero maintenance, largely because it has no moving parts. Solar panels only require cleaning with water to remove all the dust accumulated every 7 to 10 days.

16
What is Net Metering? How can I be benefited from it?

Net Metering is a policy that allows the unused power produced by the Solar PV System to be fed to the Grid (DISCOM) and this unused power can be withdrawn where there is excess consumption, so grid works as backup.

17
If I buy a Solar PV System online, how will I get to install it?

Small Solar PV Systems available online that serves the purpose of powering small equipment’s generally comes with a ready to install kit and guide. But it is recommended to hire a professional help for the installation of a large PV System as there is a risk of faulty installation and may results in fatal accidents.

18
Does the Solar Products available online come with a warranty against manufacturing defects?

Solar Products from reputed companies generally come with a manufacturer’s warranty, though the time period of the warranty differs from product to product and also from company to company. A battery generally comes with a warranty of 2-5 years, while for that of inverter is generally 5 years and can be extended for some brand. The warranty period for solar panels can even last up to 25 years.

19
Will a solar panel supply electricity 24 hours a day?

No, solar panels convert Sun light into electricity, panels will generate electricity during day time as per availability of sun light.

20
What are the cumulative benefits?
